Battery Park, once home to the Twin Towers, featured a hidden beach created by construction debris in the 1970s. Locals enjoyed the sandy spot for sunbathing and relaxation. The beach also hosted the 1979 anti-nuclear rally,
drawing 200,000 people, and became a venue for art installations, including Agnes Denes’ “Wheatfield – A Confrontation.”In the 1980s, the area was redeveloped into Battery Park City. After 9/11, the beach’s peaceful memories were overshadowed by tragedy, with old photos now evoking nostalgia and loss.
